Afgh vs Ire Test Match Preview
After the limited-overs leg, Afghanistan and Ireland series will turn to the longest format as both the teams face each other for the first time in this Tests. Afghanistan in the recent times has had an upper hand over Ireland in terms of results, and that continued when the Asghar Afghan-led side won the three-match T20I series against Ireland 3-0. The story of Afghanistan’s continued into the ODI series with the Irishmen losing the first game quite poorly. The second game was washed out due to rain and it was finally in the third ODI that the Irish middle-order batsman Andrew Balbirnie scored a magnificent hundred to guide his team to victory and keep them alive in the series. Ireland went on to lose the fourth game but came back strongly once again in the fifth and the final match to make sure that the series ended at 2-2.
Now that we are done with the shorter formats, it’s time that these two teams come face to face in the oldest format for the very first time. Ireland made its Test debut in May 2018 against Pakistan in Dublin. Their performance in that match was quite commendable as lost the match by five wickets after fighting hard for five days. Afghanistan, on the other hand, played it’s first ever Test a month after Ireland, against India in Bangalore. Afghanistan lost that game inside two days registering a loss of an innings and 262 runs.
It’s been close to a year that these two teams have appeared in a Test, so it will be interesting to see how their rivalry unfolds through these five days. Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun will host this historic contest which starts on Friday, March 15, 2019.
Pitch report for Ire vs afgh Test Match :
This will be the first time that Dehradun will host a Test, so there is very little which can be said about the pitch. Considering the scores and results in the ODIs, one thing is sure that the spinners will have an impact on the game even on the first day. The slowness of the wicket will also assist the medium pacers and aid very minimal swing. Having said that, batting shouldn’t be a lot difficult and we could see some good balance between bat and ball on all the five days of this game.

Zahir Khan and Sayed Shirzad are two of the new faces who have been added to the Afghanistan squad for the only Test against Ireland. Afghanistan depends heavily upon the key spinners. While Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi have retained their Test spot, Mujeeb Ur Rehman has been dropped from the red-ball format.
Ireland
Led by William Porterfield, the Ireland side would be confident of turning their good form into a win against Afghanistan. Players like Kevin O’Brien, Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie will have important roles to serve while George Dockrell will have the onus of spinning it away in Dehradun.
AFG v IRE Dream11 Team
WK
Neither of the wicket-keepers has made any such contribution which they can be proud of. But due to the experience and his first-class record, Mohammad Shahzad is our pick in this column. However, Stuart Poynter has talent and he may pull off a surprise performance in this game.
Batting
You may put your money on Hashmatullah Shahidi and Rahmat Shah, who known for their calmness with the bat. Kevin O’Brien and Andrew Balbirnie have performed well on this tour so far, so adding them is a no-brainer. One can also consider Paul Stirling, William Porterfield or Asghar Afghan as their batting alternatives.
All-rounder
Both the sides have quality all-rounders but George Dockrell and Mohammad Nabi are the ones who should be on demand consider their experience and performances in recent times.
Bowling
Ireland’s pace attack is solid with Boyd Rankin and Tim Murtagh in the mix. Both of them are worth picks while you can’t just keep Rashid Khan away from the side. Zahir Khan could turn out to be another surprise package for the Irishmen.
