India vs England Pitch Report

The last time India and England played in Chennai, it behaved like a classic Indian wicket. Full of runs on day 1, 2,3 and even at 4 and then it started to spin like it was supposed to. England scored over 400 in 1st inning, India scored over 700 after Karun Nair scored a 300 and then India bowled out England to win on day 5.

We expect the pitch to behave in the same way. It will be full of runs on first 3 and a half days and then the spinners will come into picture. Here are some statistics from last 5 matches about this pitch.

India Team News

Gabba breach, Border Gavaskar Trophy win with multiple injuries are a part of history now. It’s time to move on and get ready for the next series, this time in the familiar territory and with the regular captain Virat Kohli. First suspense about who will be in the team and who won’t be was about Saha and Pant. Kohli has confirmed that Pant will play the Test match ahead of Saha and Pant will play as a keeper.

Now the question Team India has to address is that whether they will go with 2 spinners or 3 spinners. If they play with 3 spinners then, Ashwin, Kuldeep and obvious picks while for 3rd spinner, there will be a toss up between Axar Patel and Washington Sundar. If India plays with 2 spinners then, Ashwin will be partnered with either Sundar or Axar based on their batting skills and Kuldeep will have to sit out.

Among the pacers, Bumrah and Ishant are certain to play and Siraj will be the third pacer if India decides to go with 3 fast bowlers.

England Team News

England has been hit by an injury right before the series as opener Zak Crawley has been ruled out of first two tests due to wrist injury. Ollie Pope was added to the side and he might start in the playing 11 while Lawrence will have to bat at 3, followed by Root at 4, Stokes at 5, Pope at 6 and Buttler at 7.  England is likely to play with only 4 bowlers which means Moeen Ali will form the spin combination with Jack Leach while Archer will partner one of Broad or Anderson, most likely Broad as fast bowler.

If England thinks of playing 3 spinners, then Dom Bess comes in for Pope but with Root already being a handy spinner, it doesn’t look likely.
