Right then, that is it from the game. Jaffna Kings get their third win and make their way on the top of the table. The Lanka Premier League, 2024 action continues as we have two games lined up on Sunday, the 7th of July. It will be Galle Marvels versus Kandy Falcons at 3 pm IST (9.30 am GMT) and Colombo Strikers versus Dambulla Sixers at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). Do join us for the early build-up as well. Until then, take care, and cheers!
The victorious skipper of Jaffna Kings, Charith Asalanka says they were aiming over 180-190 as the outfield is good and the pitch was good as well. Says that they needed to play good-quality strokes while batting and they managed to do that well. Adds that they need a bit more energy in the field and that's all they need to improve at this point.
Mohammad Nabi the skipper of Dambulla Sixers says that it has been tough for them so far. He adds that the overs in the end cost them and anything above 200 was always going to be difficult. Adds that it was only the small mistakes that cost them.
Pathum Nissanka is the Player of the Match for his knock of 88 runs. He says that he is unfazed by not reaching the three-figure mark as the team comes first. Credits Avishka Fernando for his strokeplay and the way they both batted in the second half of their innings.
Stay tuned for the Presentations...
Earlier in the game, the Jaffna Kings displayed exceptional batting performance, with Avishka Fernando and Pathum Nissanka forming a crucial partnership that propelled them to a total of 218/5, the highest in the tournament. Despite early setbacks, they recovered well with aggressive batting. Azmatullah Omarzai's late fireworks, including back-to-back sixes, added vital runs in the final over. Avishka Fernando's knock of 57 and Pathum Nissanka's 88 were key contributions. The Dambulla Sixers struggled with their bowling and failed to break the timely partnerships, ultimately conceding a challenging total.
Dambulla Sixers now lose three games in a row. They will be wretched with their efforts, especially with the ball. Coming to chase a mammoth total, was always going to be a difficult task for them. Reeza Hendricks kept on batting at one end but the other batters failed to contain with him. They kept on losing wickets whenever a good partnership was brewing for them. The partnership between Reeza Hendricks and Mark Chapman of 47 for the 4th wicket was their best attempt as a batting unit. Once Mark Chapman was out, things kept on getting downhill for them. Reeza Hendricks played a lone hand of 80 runs and he was also the top scorer for them.
A late surge in the last 5 overs with the bat from Jaffna Kings followed by a clinical bowling performance from their bowlers, helps Jaffna Kings win this by 30 runs. And with this win, the Jaffna Kings make their way to the top of the league table! It was certainly a good display of bowling from them. They just kept on picking timely wickets and never let the Dambulla Sixers settle in the game. Reeza Hendricks, though provided a slight hiccup for them but it didn't bother them much as the required rate kept on climbing for the opposition side. Asitha Fernando and Tabraiz Shamsi stood out by claiming two wickets each while maintaining impressive economy rates. Azmatullah Omarzai picked one but was very expensive for his likes. That 19th over where the Jaffna Kings took down Nuwan Thushara for 32 runs has cost Dambulla Sixers this game.
